This IFSS Basic Level Public Health Principles course provides introductory knowledge, skills, and abilities related to how regulatory agencies promote health and prevent and control feed- and food-related illness.

  • Goal: Participants will be able to recognize basic public health concepts.

  • Scope: Topics in this course include Foundations, Ten Essential Services, and Public Health Policy.

Course Objectives

Foundations

  • Define the purpose of public health

  • Identify the relationship between the ten essential services and the three core functions of public health

  • Recognize examples of public health activities

  • Identify examples of public health campaigns

Ten Essential Services 

  • Define public health systems

  • Identify the ten essential services of public health

Public Health Policy

  • Recognize how incidents drive policy

  • Recognize how stakeholders influence policy

  • Differentiate between preventive and reactive approaches to public health policy development and implementation

Duration

  • Unit 1: Foundations – 20 minutes 

  • Unit 2: Ten Essential Services – 15 minutes

  • Unit 3: Public Health Policy – 15 minutes
