The International Food Protection Training Institute’s (IFPTI) Applied Science, Law, and Policy: Fellowship in Food Protection program (Fellowship) provides food protection professionals from federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial regulatory agencies, with knowledge, skills and abilities to work effectively within the framework of food regulatory science, law, and policy.
The IFPTI Fellowship focuses on two key concepts:
- Acquisition and application of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Contribution to the food safety body of knowledge.
- Provide fellows with a high quality professional development experience.
- Prepare fellows for long-term career growth and leadership.
- Facilitate networking with other skilled food safety professionals across sectors.
The year-long IFPTI Fellowship program includes a series of seminars conducted during three week-long sessions and a research project with professional guidance and support from subject matter experts in research and food protection.
Fellowship seminars are divided in the following sessions:
- Week I - Food Law and Compliance.
- Week II - Policies and Strategies and the Impact of Science.
- Week III - Food Systems Control Applications and Prevention, Intervention, and Response.
Fellowship research project:
- Fellows are expected to design and conduct a research project about a current food protection or regulatory issue and write a journal quality paper.
- Selected papers are submitted to the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) Journal for publication.
- Fellows create and deliver a PowerPoint presentation and poster on their research at the AFDO Annual Conference.
After completing this program, fellows should have the knowledge, skills and abilities to serve as a resource within their agency and for other food safety regulators regarding:
Interpretation, implication, and application of:
- Food science
- Food laws and regulations
- Federal, state, and local policies, strategies for compliance, and enforcement tools.
Applicants must meet the following:
- An employee of a federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial regulatory food protection agency with typically a minimum of 4 years of experience.
- Completed FDA ORAU Level 1 retail or manufactured foods curriculum.
- Completed FD 170 Application of the Basics of Inspection and Investigation or equivalent training.
- Citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
- Attend each week-long session and the AFDO conference.
- Participate in the Fellowship online learning community.
- Identify research and write a paper on a current food protection or regulatory issue and the impact on the U.S. food safety system.
- Write a paper, create a poster and oral presentation for delivery at the AFDO Conference.
Fellows must attend seminars in their entirety to receive a Certificate of Completion.
Fellows are reimbursed for appropriate program travel expenses as per the IFPTI travel policy for:
- Participation in the three week-long seminars.
- Presentation at the AFDO Conference.
The first week of the Fellowship is held in August, the second in November and the final week in March. Exact dates will be determined for each cohort.
Fellowship seminars are held Monday through Thursday from 8am–5pm and 8am-noon on Friday in Battle Creek, Michigan.
