Competency Standard Development

Working with regulatory agencies around the world, IFPTI designs and implements workforce competency standards through a structured, inclusive, and evidence-based process. IFPTI guides stakeholders from initial assessment to adoption and application, ensuring alignment with national and international priorities.

The process creates a competent, aligned workforce. Individuals can demonstrate that their skills align with the competency standard and organizations can align training with needed competencies as needs evolve. Contact us to learn how IFPTI could work with your agency.

Our Approach

Establishing competency standards that strengthen the food safety system across jurisdictions requires a consistent, inclusive and systematic process throughout the stages listed here. The process ensures workforce standards are valid, relevant and widely supported by stakeholders.

 Benefits of Competency Standards

  • Grounded in evidence and reflect real workforce needs and national or organizational priorities.

  • Developed with diverse stakeholders, ensuring widespread support for implementation.

  • Learners, trainers and supervisors alike know what is expected

  • Learning resources go where they’re needed, avoiding duplication

  • Consistency across jurisdictions to ensure uniform training and fair evaluation.

  • Living, adaptable framework that evolves to remain relevant.

IFPTI has developed food safety competency frameworks for the United States (the National Curriculum Standards and the Regulatory and Laboratory Training System) and was involved in the development of competency frameworks for countries including Canada, Egypt, Ethiopia and Singapore.
