Southwest Michigan's Second Wave - "They Make Food Safer in Battle Creek"

News

The IFPTI was recently featured in an article by Jane C. Parikh in Southwest Michigan's Second Wave!

March 25, 2010 - Given that Battle Creek is famous for being home to the company that produces breakfast food for billions, it really is only natural that the city would build on Kellogg's success and focus on food as a way to drive progress for the city.

It was with that thinking that the International Food Protection Training Institute opened as a nonprofit in July with $2 million in seed money from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

"Food technology and food science are part of the overall economic development strategy for downtown Battle Creek," says Joan Bowman, spokesperson for IFPTI.

Bowman was the institute's first employee and is among six staffers. Within two to three years, she says, the institute will grow to 20 to 25 employees. [Read Entire Article]

Food Protection Report - IFPTI Teams Up to Boost its Reach

News

The International Food Protection Training Institute in Battle Creek, Mich.—which is in line for an $8 million injection of funding for fiscal year 2011, if lawmakers approve the Administration’s proposed FDA budget—is already moving ahead rapidly with new alliances aimed at extending its training. It recently announced collaborations with Louisiana State
University and with Michigan State University.

The new partnership with LSU’s National Center for Biomedical Research and Training is for development and delivery of food protection training programs. The collaborative effort began with a new NCBRT course titled “A Coordinated Response to Food Emergencies: Practice and Execution,” held February 24-25 in Battle Creek.

Gerald Wojtala, IFPTI’s acting executive director is a lead NCBRT instructor. The partners will be working together closely to develop training programs that meet the needs of first responders in food and agricultural emergencies. The NCBRT offers courses in counter-terrorism primarily to emergency responders. The center’s main source of funding is the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Another IFPTI collaboration, with MSU’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, involved delivery of FDA’s Food Processing and Technology course at the college last month. Participants included state, tribal and federal food investigators and inspectors from regulatory agencies with oversight of U.S. food manufacturing facilities, and investigators and inspectors who are or will become trainers. The course was taught by FDA instructors in a pilot laboratory setting, which included hands-on experience with processing equipment.

Food Protection Report - Acheson Joins Training Institute Board

News

In addition to his new role at Leavitt Partners, David Acheson has recently joined the board of the International Food Protection Training Institute in Battle Creek, Mich. He says his goal is to help promote a recognition that training is important to team building and creating a food safety culture in industry and government. “We need more people at the state, local and federal level who are well trained in food safety across the board—not just with the ability to check temperatures with a thermometer, but [with an understanding of] the philosophy of food safety and the importance of the food safety culture and appropriate preventive controls,” he says.
